When a newcomer decides to play poker, it’s frequently a real challenge to realize how to act. As a rule, newbies make many mistakes while betting. Of course, some player’s experience is required to choose when to fold, call or check. Even if a novice prepare for his opening game for a long time, the result might be not really good. Most commonly, all tips from books and articles are forgotten as soon as one gets his first hand.
In order for a novice player not to score plenty of overwhelming information, you should consider several tips not to get confused while playing.
This strategy is not intended for playing in tournaments, but in ordinary cash games. Also it should be emphasised that such approach is effective in games with low limits.
If the player has the following pre-flop cards: AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AKo or AQs, it is better for him to raise. If the betting circle has already reached the upper limit, then the player needs to call, regardless of the actions of other players before him. If the pocket cards are TT, 99, 88, 77, AQo, AJs, ATs, KQs, KQo, KJs or QJs, one should either call or fold. If he needs to respond with a single bet to look at the flop, then it's worth calling. If one made a bet, it is better to call each bet as many times as needed. If the player needs to make two bets to answer a bet, the best option is simply to fold the cards. If one has other hole cards, except abovementioned, it’s a clear sign to fold.
Such game may seem too tight, but thanks to this approach it is possible to win, feeling comfortable during all rounds.
The flop game is formed according to the preflop actions. You should continue the game after seeing flop cards in a number of cases.
You have the top pair or can beat the top pair with your combination.
The top pair includes the highest card on the table. As an example let’s imagine the following situation. You had KJs on the preflop and J-9-3 appeared in the next game round. This is an example of obtaining the top pair.
If your pocket cards are QJs, and KQ-7 represent the flop, QQ can not be considered top pair. However, if you have AA on your hand, also known as overpair, 77 (which gives a set with the seven on the flop), or already collected a flush or straight, then you can beat the top pair.
You got an open ended straight draw on the flop (four cards in order, which lack a card on each side to collect a straight). For example, if you have KJs hole cards, and Q-T-5 come on the flop, then you need either a nine or an ace in order to collect straight.
On the flop you have a flush draw consisting of four cards. For example, you have King and Queen of Clubs and two more cards of Clubs came on the flop. The continuation of the game will have sense only in specific cases, which will protect you from meaningless loss. In the first case, having the top pair or the best combination, you need to bet or raise only once. Then just call all the bets or raise depending on the opponents’ playing style. In other cases, you should not bet, but simply respond to the opponents' bets or check whenever possible.
If you still have the top pair on the turn, then you should continue betting or raise for one time and call all other bets.
But if you see, having only top pair, that your opponent made a bet which was risen, it’s better to fold.
If you are able to beat the top pair, especially if there is a set or better combination, then you should raise as much as possible. A straight draw or a flush draw means that you need to call any bet, but do not bet yourself and do not raise bets.
If you are still the owner of the top pair and were the last to bet on the turn after the last community card appears on the table, then you need to bet again. If the last bet was not made by you, then you need to call or check. If someone made a bet before you, which was subsequently raised, then you need to fold. If you can beat the top pair, then you need to bet at least once. If you have a combination of set or better, raise as much as possible.
The position at the poker table is the place that the player occupies in relation to the button. This position is very important, as it determines the actions order while betting. All betting rounds, except for preflop, will be completed by the player sitting on the button. This will give him a huge tactical advantage, as he will know how all his opponents played in the current round of betting. In all poker strategies positions are divided into three types:
With 10 players at the table, the late position is the button and the player on the button’s right hand. The early position unites small and big blinds and three players after them. The remaining three players are in the middle position.
You need stronger hands in the early positions, since it is likely that you will have to raise for several times.
The knowledge of main strategies and principles will help you not to get confused making your first steps in the world of poker.
