your poker evolution
As Matthew Hunt states, there is one area, in which he constantly sees gaps of an average poker player. It is their preparation for the game. As it’s said, by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail, and this is true for poker no less than for any other sphere.
As poker becomes more and more competitive, it is obvious, that the greatest benefits can be obtained from what we do outside the table. It follows, that any slight improvement, which we are introducing in preparing for poker, has an increasing impact on our results. Even if we play only 5% better, in the long run this will lead to a significant increase in our ROI. Therefore, it is important to treat poker the same way an athlete treats competitions. We should expect, that we will have to play with strong opponents, and understand that we must be in the best condition to defeat them, both physical and mental. The way we treat our body affects our brain and, therefore, our level of playing. It is necessary to devote time to physical exercises and keep a diet, to maintain the proper mental level. Will Usain Bolt run hundred metres without warming up or after having a dinner in McDonald's? Of course not. Will Lionel Messi stay in bed until 2 p. m. on the day of Barcelona’s match? The answer is on the surface. So why do some poker players do it? Because they are convinced, that they do not necessarily have to go all out to win.
Many people believe, that morning exercise can make you feel more energetic all day long. It has also been scientifically proven, that a healthy diet helps you stay more collected and alert throughout the day, so these two ways go hand in hand. After you have done everything possible to reduce your fatigue, the next step is to decide, what kind of energy level leads to the best results in your game. Here, everything depends on a person. Some players show the highest level when they play under pressure in a major tournament after drinking four cups of coffee. Such people do not experience problems associated with anxiety. The biggest obstacle to them is the lack of motivation, so they need to stir themselves with daily grinding. On the other hand, many players need some kind of relaxation in order to provide clarity of thoughts and play at their best level. For such players, yoga or meditation will be useful. Also, it is better to refuse caffeine in favor of green tea or water. Combining all these recommendations in the daily preparation for the session will help you raise your energy level to a point, where you will get the best level of performance.
Physical preparation and management of your energy levels suggest a long way to achieving the highest performance. You simply can not improve your results in the long term without understanding the aspects of your playing style. This can only be done by analyzing your own games. This is a necessary part of self-improvement, which helps to get a more complete self-awareness and eliminate shortcomings before they manifest themselves. It may be difficult for you to incorporate this into your training. However, the hand analysis is necessary, as it can be your warm-up before the session or the cool down after it. Setting goals at a strategic level will give you a sense of concentration and mindfulness in the game.
Keeping all this in mind, it's important to be flexible and find the techniques that are right for you. Some players need a high energy level and pre-game hand analysis, while others prefer to relax and analyze their hands after the session. Regardless of the combination of the preparatory exercises, try experimenting with something new, especially if the chosen method does not work. To improve as a poker player, you should accept that it is necessary not only to master poker skills, but also to become healthier physically and morally. Moreover, being able to independently analyze and adhere to the developed routine procedure will lead to the best results on a regular basis. Over time, poker will become more competitive, so the earlier you realize the need for the above, the better you will end up.
