Even a brief observation of the game of poker allows us to understand that each player has a certain set of techniques and their own poker playing style.
Despite all their diversity, poker playing styles can be divided into several types:
Knowing what poker playing styles players use will allow their opponent to prepare and develop countermeasures against actions that are typical for these styles. This is the key to a successful game, without which the progress is impossible.
The aggressive poker playing style is characterized by a frequent increase and re-raising in the process of playing. Such actions are primarily aimed at passive opponents who cannot psychologically resist aggression and have to fold. A positive feature of this poker playing style is the maximization of possible profits.
However, you should understand that misuse of your poker playing style can result in maximum losses. When using the aggressive poker playing style, you should have a clear understanding of your opponent’s type. Suppose you decided to make your opponent fold, and he appeared to be a maniac that plays badly but also aggressively. They will easily call your bet, and as a result, you’ll lose a large part of your stack.
A passive game consists in a rare increase of bets, even if there is a strong hand. Such a game is less risky due to small pots but it also has a minimal expectation from the win.
A specific feature of this style is contributing to the pot only with a strong hand and with a high mathematical expectation of winning. Such a player enters the pot quite rarely, losing small amounts due to blinds and ante. However, wins with strong hands compensate for these losses and bring significant benefits.
A tight game is considered the most profitable style, having minimal chances of losing and maximizing winnings. It is the best strategy for playing poker against aggressive and loose opponents. As a rule, tight poker playing style does not bring good results against tight opponents which forces them to play more flexible.
Loose poker playing style involves frequent entries in the pots with a large range of starting hands. When playing with tight players, it brings small but frequent winnings due to the fact that they rarely enter the pots. This style is characterized by increased bluffing. Loose poker playing style is justified when playing with weak and inexperienced opponents, but in a game with experienced ones it's always a losing one.
In poker, none of the listed styles exist in their pure form. Therefore, poker players’ styles are classified as follows:
There is an even more extensive classification of players. For example, the tight-aggressive group includes the players called "rock" and TAG whose game has some differences. Loose-aggressive players are further divided into LAGs, "maniacs", and tilting players.
A more profitable poker game lies in gaining an advantage over opponents which is facilitated by knowing their game styles and strategies that give these advantages.
